The Directorate of Technical Education was under the control of the Department of Public Instruction till 1959. Because of increase in number of technical institutions particularly in the later half of the fifties, it was felt necessary to form an independent Department of Technical Education.

Some of the technical skilled educational institutions were established before Independence (since 1943), by name "Occupational Institutes". Later, these had been renamed as "Polytechnics"(multiple technical skills/many technical skills). All these Polytechnics were working under "Public Instruction Department", from Independence to 1959.
