England won the toss and chose to bat first. The English opener batsmen Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen provided a brilliant start to the home team adding a 1st wicket stand of 91 runs in 13 overs. But Struass' innings came to end at a score of 34 runs off 37 balls losing his wicket to spinner George Dockrell in his second spell. Soon after completing his 22nd half century, Kevin Pietersen also lost his wicket, who was trying reverse sweep but completely misjudged it and gave an easy catch to wiclek-keeper Niall O'Brien.
